Quicke to make a note of this since I couldn't find anything about it.
I'm as usual a slow adopter and started using formula column not too long ago, in my defence I don't do much front end any longer unless someone wants stuff done with scripts. However the formula columns are AWESOME to do some calculations since it's updated instantly.
In this case I created a formula column so show the length of data in another (text) column which was working just fine. Well, until the customer wanted to have a longer text column at least. No worries, I just make it longer.
That's when the problems started. I got a "general SQL error" in the make portal. Searching for the error message gave me nothing really. One blog post I found after a while said that you need to update length in the legacy solution manager, which was wrong but the error message said that the formula column was using the text column. I can't really understand why this was an issue since the formula only looked at the length of the text.
I removed the formula from the formula column, then I could update the length of the text column and re enter the formula so it works as intended.
This is a slightly cumbersome work around but that's how it works right it would seem.
